The Alfa Romeo Tonale comes as a diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid

Alfa Romeo has unveiled the Tonale. The model, like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, is named after a mountain pass in the Alps, and the concept behind the new model was showcased for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. The final model is a captivating C-SUV with a clear Alfa Romeo identity, modernity, Italian design, brand-new technology, and, not least, driving characteristics that live up to the brand's heritage.

Alfa Romeo Tonale

A touch of the past

The design is distinctly Italian and very accurate to the concept from which Tonale originates. The exterior is characterized by a distinctive curve running from the rear to the headlights, which defines the Tonale's shape and gives its profile character. Connoisseurs can see lines from both the classic Giulia GT and the modern classic 8C Competizione.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale also features the classic Alfa Romeo hallmarks, such as the distinctive three-part front 'Trilobo' and three-part headlights. At the rear, the lights and window are distinctive and shapely. The Tonale also comes with the option of the iconic five-circle rims in 17'' to 20'', derived initially from 1960s models such as the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale.

Sporty, tight, and for the driver

The interior of the Tonale is, in keeping with tradition, designed with the driver in focus, although it naturally also takes care of the passengers' comfort. The prominent materials are aluminum, Alcantara, and leather, and in the center console sits the selector for Alfa Romeo DNA, which allows different driving settings. The steering wheel is compact and sporty and guarantees precise and direct feedback from the steering. Aluminum gear shift paddles can also surround it. All instruments and functions face the driver, who can concentrate on driving and the driving experience.

Immutable certificate for each car

As the first car in the world, each Alfa Romeo Tonale will be linked with a unique digital NFT certificate. The NFT technology is based on blockchain, providing a confidential and immutable record of the individual car's history. With the owner's permission, data about the particular car is saved to create a certificate that can be used to guarantee that the car has been properly maintained and serviced to benefit the car's residual value. In the used car market, the NFT certificate will provide reliable information about the car for both buyer and seller.

Tomorrow's technology

The Alfa Romeo Tonale uses software and connectivity to improve the driver's experience. With Alfa Connect Services, you get access to several services, e.g., via smartphone, which increases comfort and safety.

You can, e.g., receive updates on how much petrol and electricity there is in the car, where the car is located, unlock and enter the car, access your navigation, make calls to the call center in the event of a breakdown, and much more.

Screens and OTA

As standard, Tonale comes with an all-new infotainment system that offers content, features, and services that are always kept up-to-date, thanks to Over The Air updates. The system includes a 12.3'' screen – wrapped in the traditional periscope shape with tube-like edges around the screen – and a 10.25'' touchscreen with an elegant user interface that ensures everything is within sight without diverting attention from the road.

Comfortable safety systems

The technology is also used to ensure a high level of safety and comfort in the possibility of autonomous driving at level 2, thanks to advanced assistance and safety systems. Here, too, the driver's driving experience is in focus, and all systems work without interfering with the driver's experience so that control and the driving experience remain intact.

The systems include adaptive cruise control, lane centering, sign recognition, intelligent speed control, and Traffic Jam Assist, which automatically controls speed and distance to the vehicle in front. There is also the option of a blind spot alarm, Rear Cross Path Detection, which warns of cars from both sides when reversing, and a 360-degree camera. Tonale comes standard with automatic emergency braking that also detects pedestrians and cyclists.

Tonale also offers the option of semi-automatic parking, indicating where there is space for parking, and can automatically maneuver into and out of the space.

Hybrid with 160 and 130 hp

The Tonale is the first electrified Alfa Romeo, and Alfa Romeo has chosen that the electrification should serve the brand and its DNA. The mission is to reinvent sportsmanship for the 21st century. Tonale comes with two electrification levels: a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid.

As a hybrid, the Alfa Romeo Tonale comes in the Hybrid VGT (Variable Geometry Turbo) version with 160 hp. The turbo, combined with a 7-speed Alfa Romeo TCT dual-clutch transmission and the 48-volt P2 electric motor – producing 15 kW and 55 Nm – make it possible to drive the car's wheels even when the combustion engine is switched off. The solution has been chosen to offer a real electric experience, where the gearbox allows starting and driving at low speed and when you, e.g., parking. In addition, the hybrid engine means a more efficient engine and an extra boost to the car's responsiveness and speed.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale also comes in a hybrid version with a turbo petrol engine and 7-speed TCT dual-clutch gearbox, which produces 130 hp and 240 Nm. Both hybrid versions have front-wheel drives.

Alfa Romeo Tonale

275 hp and 0-100 in 6.2 seconds

Top performance is guaranteed with the exclusive Plug-In Hybrid Q4, which comes with 275 hp. It combines a MultiAir 1.3-liter petrol engine, an electric motor on the rear wheels, and a 15.5 kWh battery. The Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 achieves 0-100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds and offers an expected pure electric range of 80 km in the city and 60 km in mixed driving, which is best in class. With the Q4 All Wheel Drive, the plug-in hybrid drivetrain offers unparalleled safety and driving experience. When the road is smooth, the Plug-In Hybrid Q4 becomes a real four-wheel drive, and the petrol engine pulls the front wheels simultaneously as the electric motor pulls the rear wheels.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale also comes with a new diesel engine that produces 130 hp and 320 Nm, a 6-speed TCT dual-clutch gearbox, and front-wheel drive. All front-wheel drive versions come with Alfa Romeo's electronic self-locking differential as standard to provide optimal grip.

The best in class invites you to drive.

Tonale delivers the best driving characteristics in its class with full dynamics and a sporty driving experience. It has the best weight distribution between the front and rear axles and the most direct steering characteristics in its class – precisely as you would expect from an Alfa Romeo. So even though the seating position is relatively high, it does not detract from the sporty driving experience.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is the only one in its class to be equipped with an integrated braking system (IBS) and has the option of permanently mounted aluminum gearshift paddles in front of the steering wheel. The brakes are strengthened with fixed Brembo calipers, ventilated discs on the front wheels, and massive discs on the rear wheels. The Alfa Romeo Tonale has four independent McPherson struts and active electronic suspension. All in all, it provides an engaging experience behind the wheel that invites driving pleasure.

Two equipment levels and two packages

All versions of the Tonale come in two trims – Super and TI. The basic equipment variant Super can be upgraded with the Sprint package, which adds numerous details with a solid sporty touch. The Ti trim variant can be further upgraded with the Veloce package, providing the ultimate sportiness and performance. Alfa Romeo Tonale is open for orders for April in the form of the exclusive EDIZIONE SPECIALE edition.

The two hybrid versions are expected after the summer. The Alfa Romeo Tonale Plug-In Hybrid Q4 and the diesel version of the Tonale are expected at the turn of the year.
